Out with the old, in with the kinda new!

I am happy to report that we have finally disposed of this ANCIENT television! It was my brothers growing up. I'm pretty sure he got this fun little 13inch TV/VCR combo for Christmas while I was in Jr. High. We won't mention how long ago that was exactly, but IT'S OLD!

The on/off button has not worked for a LONG time and most of the buttons, including the channel and volume buttons were broken out completely. The only way to adjust the volume was to actually put your finger into the TV itself and hope you didn't get electrocuted as you pressed the electronics inside. The built in VCR also quit working a long time ago, but the power to the television only stayed on if there was a "tape" inside. This became really tricky when the VCR door broke off, and the eject button was stuck and ejecting the tape every five minutes. Thomas, who can fix anything (you should see my camera), worked that out in a jiffy!

My sweet friend Jill got a new TV from RC Willey (lucky girl) and offered us her old one (which was purchased at the pawn shop). She hadn't ever seen our 13" piece of work, since it was hidden in my bedroom, but had probably witnessed the 21" TV in our family room. I bought that TV used, of course, while going to BYU. One day my boys decided to test their strength and took a metal rod to the screen, leaving several small holes in it. Since it still worked, and did not disrupt the picture too badly, we have never replaced it.

We have thought about getting a new TV for a long time now. I like to think we didn't buy a new big screen because we are practical, or because we were afraid our boys would pound it to pieces, or because we are following President Hinckley's advice to "make it do or do without", but I know it's just because we are too cheap.

It was pretty funny when Adi looked at our new TV for the first time and said, "Wow that TV is ginormous." Our poor deprived children.

Amy - you are so smart! And I love the pictures of the old tv - we need something like that so Isaac can beat up on it. He took a spray bottle to our nice tv and got water behind the screen somehow. Nate about died - but luckily it dried out eventually. But I feel your pain. We aren't buying new couches until Isaac is on his mission!

I love it! I'm glad I'm not the only one who has remained so cheap; I think the college lifestyle of making every penny stretch ten times will carry over forever. And we are still using a 13-inch Tv/VCr combo in our room too, so the pain is shared! Enjoy the "huge" TV. Good thing kids can be excited over the smallest things!

PS, I hope you don't mind me stopping by your blog. Shelly has been showing me around some of the blogs in the ward:) Thomas seems a lot like me with fixing things except his things actually work!

I love the pic of Adi in the laundry basket, my girls always thought that was a great place to sit and lay to watch TV.
I'm so glad you are enjoying the ginormous television!
