Soap Box

My blog is usually dedicated to the hilarious things my children put me through, but just this once I wanted to write about something a little more serious.

Last night, the stars all aligned perfectly somehow allowing me to attend one day of BYU Education Week. What a fabulous day! I spent four years at BYU forever ago, so revisiting the campus, attending classes of all sorts, and reminiscing about years past was more therapeutic than anything I have done in a very long time. At Education Week, there are many different classes offered each hour all across campus, and for a small fee, you are able to attend the classes that interest you the most. For my last class of the day I chose to attend a parenting class. It's funny how a degree which focused on child development did not prepare me well enough for my children. ANYWAY, as the class started, the instructor announced that we were going to start with a hymn. I will admit to you all that I fought the urge to roll my eyes. I love BYU and should not have been surprised by the announcement, but in my head I was thinking, why waist five minutes singing, tell me how to make my children behave!!!

There was no piano in the room, so the chorister gave us a pitch as 500 adults stopped chatting and reverently sang I am a Child of God in perfect harmony. The room was instantly filled with a strong peacefulness. The words to the song reminded me that I am a child of God, who truly does love me. He sent me here to earth as part of a family, to learn and to grow, and to be happy, until I return to live with Him someday. I am so thankful for the joy and peace that having that knowledge gives me. The experience was a welcome reminder, and I thought I would pass it along. Remember who you are, where you came from, where you are going, and what you need to do to get there. If you don't have those things figured out yet, there's no better day than today to start. End of Sermon.
